Ollama vs LM Studio: Which Fits Your Setup?

Published · 8 min read

Original research brief: . Sources reviewed: .

Quick answer: Ollama and LM Studio both run language models on your own computer and serve them through OpenAI-compatible APIs. LM Studio is built around a desktop app with chat, model search and server switches. Ollama is built around a background server and terminal commands. Both can serve your local network. Choose by how you work, your hardware, and what needs to connect.

People searching "Ollama vs LM Studio" usually want a winner. There isn't one. The two tools overlap a lot, and the right pick depends on your situation. This page sets out what each tool's official docs say, side by side, so you can decide.

If you want a chat app on your computer

LM Studio describes itself first as a desktop app. Its docs list a chat interface, model search and download through Hugging Face, and the ability to run fully offline once you have model files.

Ollama on macOS also ships as an app you drag into Applications. Its docs focus mostly on the command line and the API, though. If you mainly want to chat in a window on the same computer, LM Studio's docs cover that use more directly.

If you prefer the terminal

Both tools have a command-line tool. They look similar.

Ollama (macOS, Windows or Linux):

ollama pull gemma4
ollama run gemma4
ollama ls
ollama ps
ollama stop gemma4

LM Studio (macOS, Windows or Linux). lms ships with the app; open LM Studio once before using it:

lms get
lms load <model-key>
lms ls
lms ps
lms unload --all

ollama run opens a chat in the terminal. The LM Studio equivalent is lms chat. Both have a "list what is loaded" command (ps) and a "list what is on disk" command (ls).

If you want to serve models to other devices on your network

Both tools listen only on your own computer by default. Both need one change to reach your phone or another laptop.

Ollama. Ollama binds to 127.0.0.1 on port 11434. Change the bind address with the OLLAMA_HOST environment variable. For a quick test on macOS or Linux:

OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434 ollama serve

On the macOS app, set it with launchctl setenv and restart the app. On Linux, add it to the systemd service. On Windows, add it to your user environment variables and restart Ollama. The full walkthrough is in our Ollama local network guide.

LM Studio. Turn on Serve on Local Network in the server settings, or run (macOS, Windows or Linux):

lms server start --bind 0.0.0.0

Our LM Studio server guide covers ports, tokens and fixes.

In both cases you then use the computer's network address, such as http://192.168.1.42:11434 or http://192.168.1.42:1234/v1, from the other device. If it fails, the usual causes are the same for both: wrong address, firewall, or a network that keeps devices apart. See Ollama not connecting from your phone for a step-by-step check.

If you are connecting other apps through an API

Both expose OpenAI-compatible endpoints. That means tools written for the OpenAI API can usually work with either by changing the base URL.

Endpoint Ollama LM Studio
/v1/chat/completions Yes Yes
/v1/completions Yes Yes
/v1/models Yes Yes
/v1/embeddings Yes Yes
/v1/responses Yes Yes
/v1/audio/... (speech, transcriptions, translations) Yes Not listed

Each tool also has its own native API alongside these. For LM Studio, that REST API lives under /api/v1/.

One detail trips people up. OpenAI client libraries insist on an API key. Ollama's docs say the client needs a value but Ollama ignores it, so any placeholder such as ollama works locally. LM Studio ignores keys too, unless you turn on authentication.

If security matters to you

This is the clearest difference in the docs.

  • LM Studio has an optional Require Authentication setting. You create named tokens with chosen permissions, and clients send them as Authorization: Bearer <token>. Its docs warn that any bind other than 127.0.0.1 exposes the server, and recommend turning authentication on.
  • Ollama's local API has no authentication. Anyone who can reach port 11434 can use your models.

For either tool, the safe rule is the same. Keep the server on a trusted home network. Never forward the port on your router to the internet. For access away from home, use a private VPN such as Tailscale, or an SSH tunnel.

If your hardware is older or unusual

Check the requirements before you choose.

  • LM Studio on Mac needs Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or newer. Intel Macs are not supported. It recommends 16GB of RAM or more, though 8GB Macs may work with smaller models.
  • LM Studio on Windows runs on x64 and ARM (Snapdragon X Elite). x64 CPUs need AVX2. It recommends 16GB of RAM and at least 4GB of dedicated video memory.
  • LM Studio on Linux comes as an AppImage, needs Ubuntu 20.04 or newer, and runs on x64 and ARM64.
  • Ollama on Mac needs macOS 14 or newer. It runs on Apple M series chips with CPU and GPU support, and on Intel Macs using the CPU only.

Whichever you pick, model size matters more than the tool. Our list of small LLMs for a home Mac and the guide to context length and memory help you choose a model that fits.

If you want to use it from your phone

Both tools stop at the computer. To chat from a phone you need a client that can reach the server over your network. On the Ollama side, Ollama Connect is a phone client for an Ollama host you run yourself. It can search the local network or take a host address manually, and it is available for iPhone and Android. More detail is on the Ollama Connect page. For LM Studio, any client that accepts a custom OpenAI-compatible base URL and token should work.

Quick decision checklist

  • I want a chat window and in-app model search: LM Studio's docs cover this directly.
  • I live in the terminal or run a headless server: both have CLIs; Ollama's docs centre on this.
  • I need a token on the API: LM Studio has one built in; with Ollama, rely on network controls.
  • I have an Intel Mac: Ollama supports it (CPU only); LM Studio does not.
  • My app speaks the OpenAI API: either works with a base URL change.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ollama or LM Studio better?
Neither is better for everyone. LM Studio centres on a desktop app with a chat window and built-in model search. Ollama centres on a background server and a short set of terminal commands. Pick the one that matches how you like to work.
Do Ollama and LM Studio use the same API?
Both offer OpenAI-compatible endpoints such as /v1/chat/completions and /v1/models, so many OpenAI-style clients work with either. They use different default ports: 11434 for Ollama and 1234 for LM Studio.
Which one can I use from my phone?
Both can serve other devices on your local network once you change the bind address. Ollama uses the OLLAMA_HOST setting, and LM Studio uses Serve on Local Network or lms server start --bind 0.0.0.0.
Does either one have an API key?
LM Studio has an optional Require Authentication setting with API tokens. Ollama's local API has no authentication, so keep it on a trusted network and use a VPN or SSH tunnel for remote access.
Can I run Ollama and LM Studio at the same time?
Their default ports differ, 11434 and 1234, so they do not clash on the port. Running two models at once still needs enough memory for both.
