Football Career Quest Beginner Guide: Position, Training and Match Fitness

Looking for an app to help with this? Try Football Career Quest.

Quick answer: There is no single best starting position in Football Career Quest. Pick the role whose match actions you want to see, train the ratings named on that role, keep an eye on Match Fitness, and play the fixtures where you want to make the decisions yourself. Your first four seasons are included, so the useful goal is to learn one coherent player build rather than chase every rating at once.

Football Career Quest follows one fictional player's career rather than asking you to manage a whole licensed club. The same app is currently called Soccer Career Quest in the US App Store. You create the prospect, choose a role, earn XP in matches, develop individual ratings, and decide how closely to follow each fixture.

This guide describes the current App Store version, 1.9.0. It explains the controls the game actually exposes; it is not a promise that one build or choice will force a particular result.

1. Choose the match role you want to play

The seven playable starting positions offer different prompts and emphasise different parts of a match:

  • Striker: goals, movement, and composure.
  • Winger: pace, dribbling, and crossing.
  • Attacking midfielder: vision, passing, and late runs.
  • Central midfielder: passing, stamina, and control.
  • Defensive midfielder: tackling, positioning, and strength.
  • Full back: pace, crossing, and recovery runs.
  • Centre back: marking, heading, and defensive reads.

Those descriptions come from the player-creation screen. They are a better starting point than looking for a universal “best” position: choose the decisions you would enjoy seeing across several seasons. Goalkeeper appears in the wider match simulation, but version 1.9.0 does not offer it as a player-career starting role.

2. Give your training a purpose

Matches award XP. The Development screen lets you spend that XP on individual ratings, and the cost rises as a rating becomes stronger. That makes a focused upgrade useful, but it also makes repeatedly pushing only one rating increasingly expensive.

For a simple first save, start with the ratings named in your position description, then watch which actions appear in live matches. A winger who enjoys taking on defenders has an obvious reason to care about pace and dribbling; a defensive midfielder sees more value in tackling and positioning. Stamina also contributes to several roles.

If you do not want to allocate every point yourself, Auto Select training upgrades spends affordable XP across the available ratings. It is a convenience for a broader build, not a hidden optimal strategy.

3. Treat Match Fitness as preparation, not a paywall

Match Fitness runs from 0 to 100. Playing substantial minutes drains it, while lighter appearances and recovery can restore it. Low fitness never blocks the next match in version 1.9.0, but it can reduce the minutes available and soften the resulting match rating.

The free Club Recovery option restores 15 Match Fitness and is available once per week. Other in-game recovery options use career cash, so check the displayed cost before booking one. This is fictional career money, not an App Store purchase.

The practical rhythm is straightforward: check fitness before committing to another long appearance, use the free weekly recovery when it helps, and do not assume that playing every possible minute is consequence-free.

4. Read the situation before choosing a live action

Live matches show the score, time, current event, and a set of possible actions. The simulation tests relevant player ratings, so the same button is not an automatic success for every position or player build.

Use the prompt as context rather than searching for one answer to repeat forever. A choice aligned with ratings you have developed is usually more coherent than asking a player to rely on a neglected skill. The result still belongs to the simulation, so a sensible choice improves the reasoning behind your build without guaranteeing a goal, assist, tackle, or win.

When a manager instruction is shown, it gives the match a second objective. Meeting the instruction awards 50 XP and two manager-trust points in version 1.9.0. That can make an otherwise quiet performance useful to the wider career.

5. Play important fixtures and simulate routine weeks

You do not need to watch every event to build a complete career. Use live play when you want control over match decisions or care about a particular fixture; use simulation when you want to move the season forward.

Both paths create a match result and feed career records such as minutes, rating, goals, assists, defensive work, form, XP, and rewards. Simulation is a pacing choice, not a separate throwaway save.

Version 1.9.0 also lets you keep Pause for key decisions on while fast-forwarding. Next key decision stops when a choice needs you or the match reaches full time; Sim to end is the uninterrupted option. Use the first when you want the season to move faster without giving up every decision.

6. Compare the whole contract

Transfer and contract screens show more than a wage. Read the offered club, league, squad role, contract length, signing bonus, season bonus, and match-bonus condition before accepting.

A bigger number is not automatically the right career story. Decide whether you want a larger step, a particular role, or a route that fits the player you have built. Offers depend on the career state, so this guide does not claim that a specific performance forces a specific club to appear.

7. Use the four included seasons to learn the loop

Every new career includes four complete seasons. The optional Full Game unlock is a one-time purchase that continues every current and future career into season five and onward; Apple shows the current price and purchase terms before confirmation.

That boundary gives a first save enough room to test the full weekly loop: create a player, train, play or simulate, handle career choices, finish seasons, and review the record in the Career Book. If the role did not suit you, a second save with a different position will teach you more than trying to turn one player into every role.
